So I took some sick days leave from my shitty job to hang with Newski. He crashed at our commune in Linden this time round, and took some lovely photos. Then headed off to have some songs recorded by our very own Danny Helsing.
I can't wait to hear how cool our gang vocals sound.

We don’t see many acts from the States coming to South Africa, and when we do it is often ten years after you liked the band (their retirement tour). Brett Newski’s recent tour was completely different. A young musician who’s still creating new music and performing it for us fresh before I even had a chance to listen to his new album In Between Exits. He also chose to come here, for the second time, just cos he loves our country; and loves meeting and hanging out with all the friends he’s accumulating. He sells his CDs to buy bus tickets and “bunny chow”. In fact he loves our country so much he decided to shoot the music video for the single Corazones On Cobblestones while on tour here. The album was recorded while travelling through South East Asia, giving it a great homeless traveller feel, which is also captured in the music video and when he sings, “There’s no fear in getting lost when you’re doing it on purpose.”
Other favourite songs off the album: Wet Pavement, In Between Exits and Publicity. The show at the new Bohemian was definitely the highlight of the tour for me, where he played before Sloppy Folk and The Meerkat Mob. A good old fashioned folk punk show where the audience weren't afraid to get involved, sing along, play harmonica in a song, and show him he’s always welcomed here.
