So this is a bit late but The Shabs and Rambling Bones have put out a split record and are currently touring to promote it. The split has five new songs from each band and overall is a pretty great record! Both bands have a very unique proudly South African folk punk aesthetic and the songs are all very catchy sing along numbers with lyrics about hope, love, the passing of time, removing your presidents and changing the world. Mlungu Death Machine... Live!

Flopping onto the cape town music scene, from some local punk and ska legends, surfaces the internationally ignored supergroup, Mlungu Death Machine! Armed with the best local band name of all time, an unrestrained Loopy, and musical instruments... These punk ass hippies are going to genocide your ear holes with their sweet magical dream flop (I have only heard a part of a live band practice recording off of Loopy's phone in February... but it sounded cool)

So for those unfamiliar with the word "Mlungu", what follows is some lazy internet research where I cut and past a bunch of shit from a single source. Empirical much!

"Many white South Africans believe umlungu is a derogatory term referring to “scum of the sea”, while others believe it simply means “white person”. This prompted the Dispatch to look into the origins of the word.

Zola Wababa, director of the University of Fort Hare-based IsiXhosa National Lexicography Unit, the legal custodian of the language, read the definition from the unit’s hefty Greater Dictionary of IsiXhosa.

An umlungu is, firstly, “a white person [a person of European extract]”, and secondly, a “member of the abeLungu clan descended from whites shipwrecked on the Pondoland coast circa 1700 and absorbed by the Pondos … ”

He said the word was coined during a time of colonialism and apartheid oppression but “semantic extension” has seen it being used in “polite or rude ways”.

“Words are just letters – it is the emotions attached to them by us humans which give them their power for good and evil,” he said.

“There is no history of the word being associated with white scum or foam from the ocean,” he said.

Today “ama-BEE” and “umlungu” are terms used interchangeably by people in townships and from rural areas to describe a black or white boss with power and money."

Ray van Wyk - Plays the rhythm cupboard in leather gloves.

Loopy - Shouts and plays les bass.

Jon Shaban - Fortune Favours The Brave & Folk Is Dead

So we have finally put up the solo album Fortune Favours The Brave that Jon released last year. The image above is a flyer from one of the launch tour shows. The recordings on the album are more on the folk side as to add contrast to the more fast paced full band recordings that we have uploaded a teaser for. There were a few mosh pits however on the solo album tour as keeping things chilled is not really Jon's style at a show.



The recently released full band album is not for donation as the band needs tour money but we have a teaser single for free download and you can get the CD at shows or pay for a download from The Shabeen's music page. The album is a great collection of well written songs with a lot of energy. Jon writes amazing thought provoking lyrics. The band is Jon Shaban on guitar & vocals, Ryan McArthur on Upright Bass and Thomas Glendinning on drums. The teaser we have for you is the opening song of the album.



All 12 songs on Folk Is Dead are really great but I want to close this post with the lyrics from track 11 titled Our Father's Sins. They are very relevant to being a South African (A particular white male South African's perspective yes... but still) and writing songs that are relevant is not a common thing with local musicians. So this sort of thing always impresses me when you learn to expect an attitude of disregard "Don't be a downer just be fun" bullshit.

2013 Demo Songs by Sloppy Folk

Sloppy Folk promised to release a real album, about a year or two ago, but unfortunately have no idea when this will be completed. This is due to waiting on mixes and time being consumed with "cock sucking the system in an attempt to pay rent".

Here is a small collection of demo songs, recorded in bedrooms.

Galactic Fish (From PTA) is a collection of cosmically birthed salmon who do their very best to swim up the musical stream of the cosmos. They also sport a ukulele and some in-tune yelling about politics and daddy issues.

Matt Vend and the Tender Ten - Tavern Talk

Matt Vend and The Tender 10, is the solo project of South African born singer/journalist/songwriter/traveller and nomad Matt “Beard” Wilson who has been playing music in bands since 1999, from the “tender” age of 14. His projects include the long running Sibling Rivalry, which managed to gain a loyal and cult like following throughout South Africa and even parts of Thailand being one of the most influential punk bands to come out of Durban in the last decade. The short lived but extremely well received Tubby Wilsons which delved into both Matt and fellow writer and musician Yusuf Laher’s affection for nostalgic pop and punk music and Durban’s first folk inspired punk/rock ‘n roll band Car Boot Vendors which is still very much alive yet just on hiatus whilst Matt is doing some travelling and work on his solo record.
He is no stranger to the studio and has recorded collectively over 50 songs with the various projects he has been involved with, including guest appearances with Fruits and Veggies (Durban afro/reggae misfits), Misled (Joburg’s finest new school hardcore/punk band) and Blaq Hitler (Durban MC and hip hop producer).
He is now finally delving into the production side of making music, recording and producing his first solo offering which will be out early 2012. He has been doing a few shows in and out of Bangkok over the last few months and will be embarking on an adventure through Vietnam early 2012, busking and playing shows from Hanoi to Saigon. Although recording is a big part of this musician’s repertoire live is where he shines, with literally hundreds of shows under his belt across South Africa and Thailand appearing on every stage imaginable from street corners and dingy bars to major festivals.
